Sustainable Hemlock Chairs for Community Rituals

Our collaborative project focuses on designing sustainable, market-ready wood products with a strong emphasis on environmental responsibility. We sourced Hemlock from Cortes Island (British Columbia), aligning our work with sustainable practices and highlighting the craftsmanship of the Klahoose/Cortes inhabitants. The project centers around creating an artefact tailored for the ritual of sitting and gathering, symbolizing community unity, shared stories, and collective identity.

The design, inspired by Shaker principles, features clean lines and natural wood, integrating aesthetics with functionality. Each chair we crafted carries personal narratives and cultural anecdotes, enhancing its cultural significance and presenting an opportunity to merge tradition, sustainability, and community in innovative and meaningful ways.
